UN Friends of Afghanistan Group Discusses Political, Economic Challenges

As part of ongoing international consultations on Afghanistan, Canada’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations has announced that a meeting of the Friends of Afghanistan Group was held with the participation of several countries and international organizations.

The meeting focused on Afghanistan’s political, economic, humanitarian, and human rights situation.

According to Canada’s mission, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) shared their assessments of the current situation in Afghanistan with participants.

Political analyst Gul Mohammad Din Mohammadi said: “At United Nations meetings, whether organized by UNAMA, Canada, or other countries, the real picture of Afghanistan should be presented to the world. Nationwide security has been established in Afghanistan, and developments have taken place in various sectors.”

In recent years, Afghanistan has remained a key topic of discussion at international forums, with global organizations repeatedly expressing concern over the country’s economic challenges, humanitarian situation, and growing needs.

Some analysts believe such meetings can help strengthen international coordination for continued humanitarian assistance and facilitate discussions on ways to engage with Afghanistan.

Political analyst Jannat Fahim Chakari said: “Meetings on Afghanistan at the United Nations can play a positive role in coordinating humanitarian assistance and expanding Afghanistan’s engagement with the world. The more such meetings are held, the greater the opportunities for diplomacy and international cooperation.”

Economic analyst Sayed Massoud also said: “The discussion of Afghanistan in international forums, in any form, is a positive step. It shows that Afghanistan is gradually moving away from political and economic isolation. However, achieving better results depends on how Afghanistan manages its relations and interactions with the international community.”

The meeting comes as Afghanistan continues to face economic challenges, declining foreign aid, large-scale returns of migrants, and growing humanitarian needs, while many international organizations stress the importance of continued support for the Afghan people.
