UN Security Council to Discuss Afghanistan on September 16
The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to discuss the situation in Afghanistan at its quarterly meeting on September 16.
Ahead of the meeting, Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, called on UNAMA to play an effective role in narrowing the gap between Afghanistan and the international community and the United Nations.
He added that Afghanistan, as a member of the international community, should regain its rights and rightful place.
Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, said: “We want UNAMA to play a constructive role between Afghanistan and the world, and between Afghanistan and the United Nations. UNAMA has a responsibility to clear up existing misunderstandings and present the true picture of Afghanistan at the meeting. Afghanistan is part of the international community, part of the community of nations and humanity. It should have its rightful place and regain the rights it has been deprived of.”
Rabab Fatima is expected to brief Security Council members on Afghanistan’s political, security and humanitarian situation.
This will be her first briefing since being appointed Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA.
Naqibullah Noori, a political analyst, said: “With the new leadership of UNAMA and the Security Council, they should bring a positive change to their approach toward Afghanistan and show flexibility. The Afghan government should also show flexibility on some issues.”
Omar Mukhtar Nikzad, a political analyst, said: “What is mostly raised in international reports is the issue of women’s rights and other humanitarian matters. These reports mainly focus on issues that they believe are not being addressed in Afghanistan.”
Previously, the Security Council said in a report that despite continued international engagement, including through the Doha Process, limited progress had been made toward establishing a coherent political process and addressing fundamental political and human rights issues concerning Afghanistan.
