Power Shortage Hinders Economic Development in Farah
Residents of Farah complain of severe electricity shortages, saying the lack of power has affected economic development and industrial activities in the province.
They call on the government to take serious steps to address the electricity shortage in Farah.
Abdul Wahid, a Farah resident, said: “There is almost no electricity in Farah. We want electricity to be supplied to the province. We face many problems because of the lack of electricity.”
Mohammad Noor, another Farah resident, said: “Electricity is a vital need. We use solar power, but we have no electricity at night. Solar power is also not reliable, the batteries do not last long, and many people cannot afford solar power systems.”
Local officials, however, say work has begun on plans to address Farah’s electricity problems. Based on previous assessments, electricity imported from Turkmenistan is expected to be supplied to Farah through Herat.
Nooruddin Sarem, representative of the Farah governor, said: “Programs are underway to address Farah’s electricity problem. Based on previous surveys, electricity is planned to be supplied to Farah through Herat—the electricity imported to Afghanistan from Turkmenistan.”
Electricity shortages have been one of the main problems facing Farah residents for the past two decades.
