Taliban: There are hopes for the reopening of girls’ schools in the new year

The acting head of the Taliban’s education ministry says he hopes the girls’ schools will reopen in the new school year.

Rumi Noorullah Munir, acting Minister of Education, made the remarks today during a meeting with Deborah Lines, UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, and Adrina Ojillar, UNICEF Afghanistan’s Director of Education in Kabul.

The acting head of the Taliban Ministry of Education has said that there are high hopes that girls’ schools will reopen at the beginning of the new school year.

“We allow the reopening of girls’ schools not because of foreign pressure, but because of our responsibility and commitment,” she said.

During the meeting, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and the UNICEF Education Officer also promised to cooperate in the field of education.

However, after the Taliban took control, girls’ schools have not been opened to students in most provinces of the country for reasons such as the separation of girls’ and boys’ classes and the shortage of female teachers.
