Reina Amiri: Women’s and girls’ rights must be restored to progress with the Taliban

The US Special Representative for Women in Afghanistan says any progress with the Taliban government requires the return of women and girls’ rights and the protection of vulnerable populations in the country.

Reina Amiri, the US Special Representative for women in Afghanistan, tweeted that she had a telephone conversation with Taliban Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaqi, in which he described the dissolution of the Independent Human Rights Commission, the Constitutional Review Commission and the Supreme Council. Compromise has also expressed concern.

Meanwhile, the Taliban Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Amir Khan Mottaqi, the group’s acting foreign minister, had reminded Ms. Amiri of women’s work in education, health and passports, and said that an order had been issued to observe the hijab which women do not have a problem with.

However, after taking control of Afghanistan, the Taliban imposed severe restrictions on human rights, including women and girls.
