Russia’s National Security Adviser: Most Afghans are suffering from poverty

Russia’s National Security Adviser says one in two people in Afghanistan is suffering from poverty and hunger.

According to Sputnik, Nikolai Patrishov, Russia’s national security adviser, told a meeting in the Tajik capital Dushanbe that most Afghans were living in poverty and hunger, and that the situation was likely to worsen due to economic and social problems.

“The nutrition situation in Afghanistan will soon get worse,” Patrichev said. According to available data, out of more than 40 million people, about 95% are currently suffering from food shortages and about 55% of them are suffering from hunger.

He pointed out that after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, most of the citizens of this country have migrated to neighboring countries, adding: “If the situation in Afghanistan continues like this, these numbers will increase many times.” At the same time, there is a risk that refugees will move not only to Iran and Pakistan, which currently accept more than 80 percent of migrants, but also to Central Asian countries.

Russia’s national security adviser has also expressed concern that if migration from Afghanistan to neighboring countries increases, there will be opportunities for members of terrorist organizations to infiltrate those countries.
