UN Special Rapporteur: Afghanistan is facing a governance crisis

The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan says that in addition to the humanitarian crisis, Afghanistan is also facing a governance crisis.
Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, said in a televised interview that Afghanistan was not only facing a humanitarian crisis but also a governance crisis.
He described the human rights abuses, the Taliban’s discriminatory treatment of the people and the financial crisis in Afghanistan as worrying, adding that the Taliban were violating women’s rights and preventing journalists from operating freely.
Emphasizing that the international community has left the people of Afghanistan alone, he said that the people of this country have the right to think that they have been left alone, and that is quite shocking.
The UN Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan also expressed dissatisfaction with the Taliban’s promise to establish an inclusive government in Afghanistan, saying that the group’s government seeks recognition from the international community and international assistance.
He called on the international community to send a clear message to the Taliban and the Afghan people.
