Naghlo Solar Power Project Reaches 70% Completion in Kabul

The Naghlo solar power generation project in Kabul, with a capacity of 22.75 megawatts, has reached 70% completion.

This solar energy project, which has cost over $18 million, is being jointly developed by a Turkish company and an Afghan company.

Abdul Qayum, a representative of the contracted company, said: “Around 70% of the project has been completed, and over 200 people are currently working here.”

An official from the state-owned power utility, Breshna Company, stated that upon completion, the project will supply electricity to nearly 23,000 households in Kabul, Laghman, and Nangarhar provinces.

Faridullah Sharafmal, Head of Investment Coordination at Breshna Company, said: “We expect to start using the electricity from this project within four months. It will help alleviate electricity shortages and ease power issues for residents in Nangarhar, Laghman, and Kabul.”

According to Sharafmal, in order to protect the environment, the company has prioritized the generation of clean energy.

He added: “Breshna Company has placed renewable energy at the top of its agenda, and for this reason, we have contracted several solar projects with the private sector.”

The contractor says all technical work on the project is being carried out by Afghan engineers and workers, with 200 people currently employed.

Despite the interim government’s efforts to develop energy from domestic sources, Afghanistan still imports the majority of its electricity from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Iran.
