First Official Visit by UK Envoy to Kabul Highlights Engagement Efforts

The United Kingdom’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Richard Lindsay, visited Kabul for the first time and held meetings with officials of the Islamic Emirate as well as a number of Afghan citizens.
Following the trip, he wrote on X: “Just returned from my first visit to Kabul as UK Special Envoy. Met a range of Afghans including Taliban ministers, and discussed issues including health, and returnees from Iran and Pakistan. Afghanistan will only move forward through inclusive dialogue and engagement.”
Reacting to the visit, Ahmad Khan Andar, a political analyst, said: “The Islamic Emirate must strengthen its political, economic, and diplomatic relations with all neighboring, regional, and global countries, especially the world powers. The recent remarks of the UK’s special envoy at the end of his trip are very important for fostering friendly political and diplomatic relations between Afghanistan and the United Kingdom.”
This visit took place while the UK is among the countries that have not yet recognized the interim government of Afghanistan. However, it has expressed willingness for limited engagement in order to facilitate aid delivery and manage migration and terrorism-related crises.
Fazl-ur-Rahman Oria, another political analyst, said: “Diplomatic relations with the UK will be elevated, and Afghan diplomats will initially be accepted at a lower level in the UK. This will also impact Europe and Western countries, as they often follow the UK’s policies.”
Idris Mohammadi Zazai, another analyst, expressed the following view: “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has realized that it must maintain direct and structured political, strategic, and diplomatic relations with all countries, including the West.”
It is worth noting that earlier, the acting Minister of Refugees and Repatriation, in a meeting with the UK’s chargé d’affaires to Afghanistan and several British diplomats, stated that the Islamic Emirate had addressed the world’s concerns regarding Afghanistan.
He emphasized that Western countries, including the UK, should no longer delay in recognizing the Islamic Emirate.
