UN Proposal for Peace in Yemen: Avoid Regional Escalation

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, speaking at a UN Security Council meeting via video conference from the Jordanian capital, said that to give Yemen a real chance at peace, the country must be prevented from becoming entangled in the regional crisis stemming from the war in Gaza.

He stressed that the parties involved in Yemen must take steps to build trust and goodwill.

The UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, said: “For Yemen to have a real chance for peace, it must be protected from being further drawn into the ongoing regional turmoil emanating out of the war in Gaza. Therefore, the strikes against civilian ships in the Red Sea must cease. The missile attacks against Israel and the subsequent Israeli strikes on Yemen must also come to an end. Beyond complicating the mediation space for a long-term settlement of the conflict in Yemen, this escalation has led to the near destruction of Yemen’s west coast port facilities. This is placing immense strain on Yemen’s vital infrastructure.”

The UN humanitarian affairs coordination chief in Geneva said Yemen is now one of the most food-insecure countries in the world, with economic collapse and ongoing conflict leaving many families unable to afford food.
He emphasized that inadequate health services and limited access to humanitarian aid have turned the situation for children into a life-or-death crisis.

In recent years, Yemen has grappled with multiple crises that have affected the lives of millions. Rising regional tensions, particularly after the outbreak of the Gaza war, have increased the risk of further conflict in Yemen and complicated efforts to achieve peace.

In this context, the UN and international organizations have repeatedly warned about the humanitarian dangers and catastrophic consequences of the crisis, calling for an end to the fighting and increased support for the people of Yemen.
