Floodwaters Trigger Emergency in Pakistan

Due to the continued heavy monsoon rains in Pakistan, floodwaters have risen in parts of Punjab, and authorities have declared an emergency alert.
Rescue teams have urged residents of villages located along the Pakistan–India border in Punjab to immediately leave their homes as water levels are rapidly rising. However, many locals are refusing to abandon their homes, livestock, and belongings.
According to Punjab disaster management officials, over 19,000 people have been evacuated from flood-hit areas in the past 24 hours, and rescue operations continue across various cities of Punjab.
Mohammad Akbar, media coordinator of the Relief and Rescue Organization, said: “indicating a high flood level. However, many residents remain hesitant to leave their homes. We’re prioritizing voluntary evacuations, providing transport services to those who want to relocate. So far, we’ve assisted over 5,000 people and evacuated more than 800 cattle. We’re not resorting to forced evacuations at this time, focusing on supporting those who choose to leave.
Some villagers in Punjab, however, say they are unable to move elsewhere due to the lack of alternative land or housing, and because many rely on daily wage labor.
According to Pakistan’s national authorities, since the onset of the monsoon season in late June this year, 785 people have lost their lives in floods.
