Afghanistan Nears 75% Completion of CASA-1000 Project

Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), Afghanistan’s power company says that work on the regional CASA-1000 project in Afghanistan has reached nearly 75% completion.

According to officials, the project is being implemented simultaneously in three sections.

The DABS officials add that once completed, Afghanistan will earn about $65 million annually from electricity transit fees.

Mohammad Tawoos Farzad, an economic analyst, said: “With the implementation of this project, Afghanistan can obtain electricity and also receive between $50 to $60 million in transit fees; however, the key issue is that if tensions between Kabul and Islamabad continue, completing this project will be difficult.”

At the same time, Abdul Haq, an aide to the head of Breshna, held an online discussion with Tajikistan’s Minister of Energy, Daler Juma, about the progress and challenges of the CASA-1000 electricity transmission project.

The Tajik Energy Minister, referring to the strategic importance of CASA-1000, stated that his country supports technical coordination and joint efforts to accelerate the project’s implementation.

Mir Shakib Mir, another economic expert, said regarding meetings among participating countries: “Regular meetings among the involved countries can help address obstacles and challenges, strengthen coordination and cooperation, and ensure the successful implementation of CASA-1000.”

CASA-1000 is considered one of the key regional energy projects aimed at transferring electricity from Central Asia to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Experts believe that implementing this project can strengthen Afghanistan’s role as an energy transit bridge in the region.

Mohammad Nabi Afghan, another economic analyst, added: “Implementing this project is essential for us, as it will solidify Afghanistan’s position in the region and the world, and help improve our connections globally, as it serves as a means of linking with the world.”

It is worth noting that the CASA-1000 project has been completed in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and in Afghanistan it is being implemented in three phases: the first from Imam Sahib in Kunduz to Baghlan, the second from Baghlan to Surobi, and the third from Surobi to Torkham.
