Barham Salih: The International Community Should Not Ignore Afghanistan

During his first visit to Afghanistan, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees emphasized the need for continued international support for the Afghan people, efforts to address the returnee crisis, and sustained engagement with the Islamic Emirate.

In an interview, Barham Salih said Afghanistan holds particular importance in terms of regional and global security, as well as humanitarian values and human rights.

He said: “Without any doubt, I believe engagement is essential. We cannot turn our backs on Afghanistan. This country matters, and so do its people. Moreover, Afghanistan is important from the perspective of regional and global security, as well as humanitarian values and human rights.”

Referring to his meetings with officials of the Islamic Emirate, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees added that creating an enabling environment for international organizations to operate is essential to expanding cooperation with the international community.

According to him, education particularly for girls the participation of women in society, and opportunities for all citizens to contribute are among Afghanistan’s fundamental development needs.

Barham Salih said: “Without the participation of half of society, achieving development and delivering effective assistance is not possible. Women and girls are an important part of the country’s human capital, and their talents and capacities should be utilized for development, social peace, and future prosperity. Access to education is a fundamental necessity.”

He also called for a reduction in tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, saying that disagreements between the two countries should be resolved through dialogue, as the continuation of these tensions benefits neither country nor the region.

Mr. Salih said: “I hope these tensions and disagreements will be resolved as soon as possible. The last thing this region needs is the beginning of a new round of conflict. We must not allow extremist and armed groups to exploit these tensions. The region needs peace and cooperation, and I hope a solution can be found to this situation.”

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees also said that the return of Afghan migrants from neighboring countries should be voluntary, safe, and conducted with dignity.

He added that the United Nations is in contact with Iran and Pakistan and continues to stress the need for both countries to uphold their international obligations toward refugees and ensure the voluntary, safe, and dignified return of Afghan migrants.
