Afghan Envoy: Kabul–New Delhi Relations Continue to Grow

The acting ambassador of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to India described political relations between Kabul and New Delhi as strong during a joint press conference with the Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock.

He said the relationship between the two countries is historic and continues to expand.

Noor Ahmad Noor, the acting head of Afghanistan’s embassy in India, said: “Our relations with India did not begin today or yesterday. They are rooted in history. Our cultures and traditions are similar. India and Afghanistan are very close to one another. This relationship is built on deep people-to-people ties, and that foundation will remain strong.”

At the same press conference, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Ataullah Omari described expanding agricultural cooperation between Afghanistan and India as important.

He said nearly 80 percent of Afghanistan’s population depends on agriculture and livestock for their livelihoods.

Omari said: “Eighty to eighty-five percent of the Afghan people are employed in agriculture, livestock, and irrigation. We must move them beyond traditional methods and equip them with modern technology.”

He also said the warm reception he received from Indian officials during his visit to New Delhi was a positive sign of strengthening relations and expanding bilateral cooperation between Afghanistan and India.

Omari added: “The warm welcome and support shown by this country for the people of Afghanistan gives us hope that our nation, after 45 years of war, can stand on its own again.”

The remarks came two days after the fourth meeting of the Afghanistan–India Joint Working Group was held in New Delhi, where officials discussed bilateral engagement and cooperation between the two countries.
