Ministry: Afghanistan Ready to Renovate Border Markers With Neighbors

The Ministry of Interior of the Islamic Emirate says Afghanistan is ready to cooperate on renovating border markers with countries with which it shares officially recognized borders.

The ministry’s spokesperson told that consultations have been held with some countries, including Iran, and the process is expected to begin in the near future.

According to Abdul Matin Qani, a special committee and budget have also been allocated for the process.

Abdul Matin Qani, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, said: “We are working to renovate and manage border markers. Joint committees have been formed in coordination with the Ministry of Defense and the General Directorate of Intelligence. Short-term plans have also been developed that will help curb smuggling, and we have practically begun work in this area.”

Earlier, the Minister of Borders and Tribal Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, during a meeting with the acting head of the Iranian Embassy in Kabul, assured Afghanistan’s full cooperation in accelerating the process of renovating border markers.

The acting head of the Iranian Embassy in Kabul also said Tehran is ready to cooperate in the process of border demarcation and the renovation of border markers between the two countries.

Yousuf Amin Zazi, a military affairs analyst, said: “The government has several departments and institutions working in this area. However, these committees must work professionally, and historical knowledge is essential when it comes to renovating markers or demarcating official borders.”

Afghanistan shares borders with six neighboring countries. It has officially recognized borders with Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and China, while it has faced longstanding disputes with Pakistan over the hypothetical Durand Line.
