UNAMA expressed concern about the Taliban’s decision to keep schools closed to girls

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has expressed concern over the Taliban’s decision to keep schools closed to girls above the sixth grade.
Debora Lines, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan, today expressed grave concern and frustration at the UN leadership in Afghanistan over the Taliban leadership’s decision to keep schools closed for girls in grades six and up.
Ms. Lions, who also chairs UNAMA, stressed that education is a fundamental human right and essential to Afghanistan’s recovery from the economic crisis and the creation of a strong social fabric.
The Taliban promised that all schools across Afghanistan would be open to girls and boys today, but this morning the group’s Ministry of Education announced that girls’ schools would remain closed to girls.
The ministry said in a statement that if the school uniform was designed in accordance with Afghan law, customs and culture, then girls’ schools would be reopened.
