US official: The withdrawal of US troops from Kabul has begun

A U.S. military official was quoted as saying in an interview with Reuters that US troops were in the final stages of evacuating Kabul and that more than 1,000 civilians were now inside the airfield waiting to be evacuated.

The official, who did not want to be named, also said that the process of withdrawing US troops from Kabul had begun, but he did not say when the withdrawal operation would end.

Last week, a suicide bomber struck outside the entrance to Kabul airport, killing at least 170 people, including 13 foreign soldiers and two journalists.
